Recruited from South Yarra, Harry Selover's brief senior career is best remembered for its remarkable post-script rather than his on-field exploits during a bleak period for the Melbourne Football Club. He earned his call-up late in the 1919 season, joining a demoralised lineup that was en route to a winless wooden spoon campaign. Selover played the final three matches of the year, managing to boot two goals as a forward option, but he could not cement a place in the senior side the following season and spent 1920 in the reserves. While he left the VFL scene to play cricket for Caulfield and Ormond, he eventually reclaimed the spotlight nearly a century later; at the time of his death in 2001, the 102-year-old was celebrated as the oldest living VFL/AFL player, outlasting every contemporary from his playing days.
