Teams

Recruited from Beechworth in the Ovens & Murray Football League, Harry Thompson arrived in the VFL with a reputation as a prolific country spearhead. After a false start with St Kilda in 1898 yielded just a single senior appearance, he crossed to Princes Park the following season to try his luck with the Blues. His brief stint at Carlton resulted in one of the league's great statistical quirks: despite not debuting until Round 12 and playing only six games for the club, his return of eight goals was enough to see him crowned Carlton's leading goalkicker for the 1899 season. A capable forward stuck in a low-scoring era for a struggling side, Thompson holds a unique place in history as a club leading goalkicker who played fewer than ten career games.
