Recruited from the Ballarat Imperials, Harry Wright established himself as one of the colony's most versatile athletes, arriving at Essendon in 1894 and immediately featuring in a VFA premiership. A cool and reliable centreman renowned for his gymnastic agility and balance, Wright was a linchpin of the 'Same Olds' during the transition to the VFL, playing in the club's inaugural league match and starring in the 1897 and 1901 premiership sides. He etched his name into folklore during the 1897 finals series, booting the match-winning goal against Geelong to help secure the competition's first-ever flag.
