Bio
Born in New South Wales but hailing from the Gippsland region, Harvey Johnson was a country recruit who arrived at Glenferrie Oval with a colorful history. A talented follower from Sale, his pre-VFL career was interrupted by a year-long suspension in 1928 after he was caught playing for a rival league under an assumed name without a clearance. Johnson eventually made his way to Hawthorn for the 1932 season, where he showed immediate promise by holding his spot for the first 12 consecutive rounds and offering a competitive presence around the stoppages. Despite this solid start, his VFL tenure was limited to a single season before he returned to the bush to captain-coach Sale. His life ended tragically in 1948 when, having survived service in World War II, he was electrocuted while working as a linesman on high-tension wires in Drouin.
