Arriving at Fremantle as a mature-age recruit after winning the 2008 Sandover Medal with Peel Thunder, Hayden Ballantyne quickly established himself as one of the league's premier small forwards. Standing at just 174cm, he built his game on manic defensive pressure, elite goal sense, and a unique ability to antagonise opposition defenders. His high-energy approach often saw him straddle the line between aggression and discipline, making him a polarising figure across the competition but a cult hero among the Fremantle faithful.

Ballantyne enjoyed his peak years during the Dockers' most successful era, forming a lethal partnership with Michael Walters that became the focal point of the club's attack. His standout 2014 season saw him boot 49 goals to top the club's goalkicking and earn All-Australian honours, cementing his status as a key component of Ross Lyon's intense game plan. While soft-tissue injuries hampered his output in the twilight of his career, Ballantyne departed the club in 2019 as a loyal one-club player who played a pivotal role in Fremantle's maiden Grand Final appearance.
