Bio
Recruited from Spotswood in Melbourne's western suburbs, Haydn McAuliffe was a crafty rover and forward who carved out a respectable career with South Melbourne during the Bob Skilton era. Standing at 175cm, he was a dangerous option when resting forward or pushing into the middle, possessing the ability to accumulate possessions while maintaining an impressive strike rate of almost exactly one goal per game throughout his nine-season tenure at the Lake Oval.
McAuliffe was a contributor during the club's memorable 1970 campaign under legendary coach Norm Smith, where the Bloods finally broke a 25-year finals drought. Although he was capable of prolific ball-winning performances—including a massive 36-disposal effort in Round 3 of that year—he was ultimately named as a reserve for the historic First Semi-Final against St Kilda. He remained with the club for another three seasons before finishing up at the relatively young age of 27, retiring as a 100-game player and a valued servant of the club during a tough competitive period.
