Recruited from Norwood with pick 42 in the 2005 Rookie Draft, Heath Grundy carved out a remarkable career as one of the Sydney Swans' most durable defenders. Initially debuting as a forward, his early career was defined by the heartbreak of being omitted from the 2006 Grand Final side despite playing in the Preliminary Final victory. Grundy eventually reinvented himself as a key defender, using his physical strength and ability to read the play to become an immovable object in the Swans' backline. Affectionately known as "Reg," he formed a formidable defensive partnership with Ted Richards that served as the backbone of the team's success for over a decade.

Grundy was instrumental in Sydney's 2012 premiership victory, famously curbing some of the competition's best key forwards, and he featured in two further Grand Finals in 2014 and 2016. A master of the one-on-one contest and an underrated intercept mark, he was renowned for his consistency and rarely missed a game during his prime. He retired early in the 2019 season due to a lingering back injury, concluding his career as one of the greatest rookie list success stories in VFL/AFL history and sitting inside the top ten for all-time games played for the club.
