Bio
Recruited from the Eastern Ranges, Heath Hocking joined Essendon via the 2006 Rookie Draft and worked his way up from the supplementary list to become a mainstay of the senior side. Physically robust and disciplined, he established himself as the club's designated tagger, a role he performed with a selfless, defensive-first mindset. Hocking was often deployed to clamp down on the league's elite midfielders, relying on heavy tackling and close-checking accountability rather than high possession counts to make his impact.
A consistent figure in the Bombers' midfield for much of his career, Hocking's tenure was significantly interrupted by the club's supplements saga, which saw him miss the entire 2016 season due to suspension. He returned to the list in 2017 but found opportunities limited in a refreshed lineup, eventually departing at the end of that season. Hocking left Essendon as a respected one-club player who maximised his natural ability through sheer work rate and a willingness to perform the unglamorous tasks required for the team.
