Recruited from Fairfield, Hec McKay was a defensive stalwart for South Melbourne who served as the backbone of the backline during the club's celebrated 1930s era. Unlike the high-profile interstate recruits who formed the famous "Foreign Legion," McKay was a local recruit who had already established himself as a premier defender before the club's golden run, winning the Best and Fairest award in 1927 in just his second season. While headlines were often dominated by the high-flying exploits of forwards like Bob Pratt and Laurie Nash, McKay provided essential stability at the other end of the ground.

A quintessential full-back who rarely ventured past the centre square, McKay managed just a single goal across his 152-game career, preferring to focus on spoiling and repelling opposition attacks. His crowning achievement came in 1933, where he manned the last line of defence in the Premiership victory over Richmond, helping to secure the club's third flag. He remained a key fixture in the side through the 1934 Grand Final loss and retired in 1935, leaving a legacy as one of the club's most reliable locally-produced talents.
