Henry Dunne holds a distinct place in history as a member of Carlton’s inaugural VFL side, featuring in the club’s very first league match against Fitzroy in 1897. Recruited from the Austral Football Club, he arrived at Princes Park in time to represent the Blues in the VFA before transitioning into the newly formed competition the following year. On the field, Dunne was a versatile bookend, utilized primarily as a pocket player who could rotate between the forward line and defence depending on the team's structural needs. He remained a regular selection during the club's first two VFL campaigns, playing 24 games and booting six goals before finishing his senior career at the end of the 1898 season.
