Stats
Bio
Recruited from Beulah in the Mallee region of Victoria, Herb Boschen was a physically imposing utility who arrived at South Melbourne during the club's aggressive roster overhaul in the early 1930s. Standing 188cm and weighing 91kg, he was a giant by the standards of the era, capable of imposing himself in the ruck or holding down a key defensive post. He debuted in Round 1, 1932—the same match as future club legend Herbie Matthews—and was immediately noted in the press for his exceptionally long kicking. However, Boschen's VFL career was derailed almost as soon as it began; he suffered a debilitating shoulder injury against Carlton in just his second game and struggled to recapture his spot in a rapidly strengthening lineup. After four senior appearances, he returned to the country, where he later featured in a 1934 premiership side for Rosebery.
