Bio
Recruited from Morwell, Herb Burleigh was a damaging centre half-forward whose promising career was defined and ultimately curtailed by the Great War. He quickly established himself as the focal point of the Blues' attack, topping the club's goalkicking list in 1915 and delaying his military enlistment just long enough to play a role in Carlton's Premiership campaign that September. Burleigh suffered a severe forearm injury while serving on the Western Front, a wound that permanently compromised his playing ability. Despite a courageous attempt to resume his career at Princes Park in 1919, he managed just three final games before the lingering effects of his service forced his retirement, after which he returned to his original profession as a country schoolteacher.
