Stats
Bio
Recruited from local club West Footscray, Herb Esse was a wartime recruit who earned his opportunity with the Bulldogs during the difficult 1943 and 1944 seasons. Standing at 183cm, he possessed the size to play key roles but found his VFL career heavily restricted by global events rather than a lack of talent. His time at the top level was defined by his commitment to the war effort, where he achieved the rare distinction of serving in both the Australian Army and the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF). These military commitments limited him to just 10 senior appearances over two years, preventing him from establishing a long-term place in the side before his football journey effectively concluded with the end of the war.
