Bio
Recruited from South Melbourne Juniors, Herb Friend was a diminutive footballer who struggled to establish a permanent place at the top level. He made his VFL debut for Melbourne in the opening round of the club's jubilee season in 1908, but managed only two senior appearances before losing his spot in the side. After spending the 1909 season in the VFA with Port Melbourne to regain form, he was handed a second lifeline by St Kilda the following year. However, Friend added just one more game to his tally in red, white, and black before drifting out of the league, finishing his brief career with just three matches across two clubs.
