Bio
Recruited to Footscray in the early 1950s, Herb Henderson rapidly developed into the premier full-back of his generation, serving as the defensive anchor for the club's celebrated 1954 premiership team. A disciplined and fair player who relied on speed and spoiling ability rather than physical aggression, he famously never reported an opponent nor was reported himself throughout his entire VFL tenure. His playstyle was defined by intense concentration and an ability to negate the era's most dangerous forwards, playing a crucial role in the Bulldogs' maiden flag triumph.
Henderson's legacy is inextricably linked to his battles with Essendon icon John Coleman. He holds the unique distinction of being the only defender to keep Coleman goalless in a completed match, achieving the feat during a famous duel at the Western Oval in 1954. This defensive masterclass, combined with his consistent excellence, saw him named at full-back in the Western Bulldogs Team of the Century. Although he retired relatively early at the age of 28, Henderson remains revered as one of the finest defensive technicians to wear the red, white and blue.
