Bio
A gifted all-round athlete from Bendigo, Herb Hunter remains one of the few players to appear at VFL level while still a student at Melbourne Grammar. He broke into the Essendon lineup midway through the 1900 season, playing three games as a graceful centreman where he was immediately noted for his "artistic" use of the ball and elite speed. Despite showing the potential to become a league star, Hunter walked away from football after that brief cameo to focus on his dental studies and track and field career, eventually setting a world schoolboy record in the long jump and winning Australasian titles. His post-football life saw him study in Pennsylvania and return to Victoria as a surgeon, but his story ended in tragedy when, serving as a Captain in the AIF, he was killed in action during the Second Battle of Krithia at Gallipoli.
