Stats
Bio
Recruited from Mitcham in Melbourne's eastern suburbs, Herb Sawatzky was a strongly built follower who became a standout performer in the Richmond seconds during the mid-1950s. Standing 183cm and weighing over 90kg, he possessed the physical frame to compete in the ruck and around the ground, yet found himself largely stuck behind established senior players at Punt Road. While he managed only a handful of senior appearances, his legacy at the club was defined by his dominance at the lower level, where he played a pivotal role in back-to-back reserves premierships in 1954 and 1955 and won the reserves Best and Fairest in his final year. Unable to secure a permanent spot in the Tigers' first 18, he crossed to the VFA in 1956 to join Box Hill, where he enjoyed a sustained career as a regular senior player.
