Bio
Recruited from Leopold, Horrie Drane was a fine running player who initially struggled to cement a spot at Melbourne, missing the entire 1903 season before stringing together three consistent years in the red and blue. He crossed to South Melbourne in 1907, but his tenure at the Lake Oval is best remembered for its fairytale conclusion. By 1909, Drane was on the fringe of selection, having played just one senior match for the entire home-and-away season. In a stroke of fortune, regular winger Jim Caldwell was suspended for striking in the Preliminary Final, handing Drane a shock recall for the Grand Final against Carlton. He seized the opportunity, walking away from the game immediately after the match as a premiership player in his final VFL appearance.
