Recruited from local side Windsor, Howard Smith became a durable fixture on the wing for St Kilda during the club’s notoriously difficult formative years in the VFL. Joining the Saints in 1898, he was a constant presence in a side that endured a record-breaking 48-game losing streak, eventually tasting success as part of the historic team that recorded the club's first-ever VFL victory against Melbourne in 1900. Smith was a defensive-minded midfielder rather than a goal-kicker, prized for his reliability and ability to take the field week after week while the lineup around him constantly churned. His career had a tragic postscript, as he passed away in 1909 at the age of just 31, only five years after hanging up his boots.
