Stats
Bio
Recruited from VFA club Brunswick, Howard "Doc" Steel was a tall ruckman who stood an imposing 189cm, a significant height for the era. He made an immediate impression upon his arrival at Melbourne in mid-1930, named among the best players on debut against Carlton in Round 15. Despite this promising start, Steel found regular senior opportunities difficult to come by over the subsequent two seasons, often stuck behind established followers in the pecking order. While he managed only a handful of senior appearances, he tasted success with the club's reserves, playing a key role in their 1931 Seconds premiership. He departed the Demons at the end of 1932, and although Collingwood expressed interest in his services, he did not add to his VFL game tally.
