After foregoing a professional basketball career in the NCAA and with the Perth Wildcats, Hugh Greenwood switched codes to join Adelaide as a Category B rookie in 2015. Despite his late start to football, the big-bodied midfielder made an immediate impact upon his 2017 debut, becoming renowned for his elite tackling pressure and clearance work, a rise that culminated in a Grand Final appearance in his first season. Seeking greater contract security and midfield responsibility, he moved to the Gold Coast Suns in 2020, where he served as a key contested ball-winner and leader for a developing side.

His tenure at the Suns ended controversially in late 2021 following a list management gamble; while Gold Coast administratively delisted him with the explicit intention of re-drafting him to manipulate list spots, North Melbourne unexpectedly swooped to sign him as a delisted free agent. At Arden Street, Greenwood provided much-needed physical presence and experience to a rebuilding midfield group, often utilised for his defensive application and ability to lock the ball inside contests. He concluded his career in 2024, retiring as one of the modern era's most successful code-converts.
