Bio
Recruited from the Fitzroy Juniors, Hugh Heron’s brief playing career is often remembered for its unique family connection, as he made his VFL debut in Round 3, 1912, alongside his brother Percy. A handy utility standing 175cm, Heron managed ten games and kicked a single goal in his debut season before crossing to Essendon the following year. He struggled to break into the Same Olds' lineup, adding just two senior appearances in 1913 before his time as a player came to a close. While his on-field impact was limited, Heron forged a more significant legacy as an official, serving as a boundary umpire for 120 matches between 1914 and 1926, a tenure that included officiating the 1923 Grand Final. His contribution to the game was interrupted by service in World War I with the Royal Australian Naval Bridging Train and later the Field Artillery, marking him as a dedicated servant to both his code and country.
