Family

The younger brother of former Tiger David Moffatt, Hugh Moffatt was an imposing ruckman who finally broke into the VFL ranks as a mature-age recruit at 27 years old. Originally playing with Richmond’s junior affiliate Beverley in 1915, he took a lengthy hiatus from the sport before re-emerging with Clifton Hill CYMS in 1920. Standing 185cm and weighing a solid 95kg, he offered significant physical presence in the contest but found opportunities limited at Punt Road, managing just nine senior appearances across two seasons. Seeking greater continuity, Moffatt crossed to the VFA in 1923 to join Preston, where he immediately made his mark by playing in their premiership side that same year.
