Recruited from local club Newtown & Chilwell, Hugh Strahan was a versatile key position player who carved out a respectable six-season tenure at Kardinia Park. Standing at 185cm, he was often tasked with holding down centre half-back but possessed the utility value to swing forward and hit the scoreboard when required. He became a consistent member of the senior side during the late 1960s, featuring prominently in Geelong's 1968 and 1969 finals campaigns. After leaving the VFL at just 27 years of age, Strahan moved to Tasmania to play for Cooee, where he cemented his reputation as a premier footballer by twice winning the Alstergren Trophy as the state's best representative player.
