Bio
Recruited from Brighton, Hughie Callan was a nimble follower renowned for his "greyhound" speed and reckless courage on the field. After establishing himself at Essendon, his VFL career was interrupted in 1906 when a transfer with the Bank of Australasia took him to New Zealand. He returned the following season to join South Melbourne, immediately slotting into the side that contested the 1907 Grand Final. A versatile tall who could palm the ball with precision or rove his own work, Callan's legacy is that of a skilled amateur whose life was tragically cut short when he was killed in action in France during World War I.
