Recruited from Rochester in the Bendigo League, Hughie Murnane arrived at Melbourne with significant hype after the Demons beat Richmond to his signature based on an umpire's recommendation. Standing 187cm, he was a versatile tall capable of playing as a key forward or follower, immediately impressing as one of the league's best first-year players in 1937. Despite his early promise and regular appearances during the club's golden era under Checker Hughes, Murnane suffered the heartbreak of missing both the 1939 and 1940 senior premierships; he was dropped late in the 1939 season after missing a training session, eventually settling for a Reserves flag that year instead. His VFL career was curtailed by a knee injury and World War II service, though he later cemented a strong legacy in Gippsland football as a premiership captain-coach for Sale.
