Bio
Hughie Tait was a half-forward flanker who joined Essendon via University, breaking into the senior side midway through the 1913 season. He made an immediate impact as a rotating forward, booting five goals in his eight VFL appearances, including a two-goal haul against Geelong. His football career was brief, and his subsequent attempt to serve in World War I concluded in unusual circumstances. Although Tait enlisted in the 1st AIF in 1915, he was discharged after just two months at the urgent request of his employer; as a skilled electrician and mechanic manufacturing buckles for the Defence Department, his trade was deemed a reserved occupation essential to the war effort on the home front.
