Bio
A local product recruited from Spotswood, Ian "Don" McKenzie broke into the Footscray side in 1962, arriving just after the club’s 1961 Grand Final appearance. Standing 180cm but with a light frame, he carved out a niche as a goal-kicking utility who could rotate between the midfield and the forward line. He possessed a sharp sense for goal, maintaining a strike rate of nearly a goal per game throughout his career, and became a fixture of the Bulldogs' lineup during a lean decade where the club often struggled to bridge the gap to the top four.
McKenzie's influence extended well beyond his playing tenure at the Western Oval. After departing the VFL in 1970, he crossed to the VFA to captain-coach Sunshine, where his class shone through as he won the J.J. Liston Trophy—the association’s highest individual honour—in 1972. His football journey eventually came full circle when he returned to Footscray to serve as senior coach, taking the reins midway through 1978 and leading the club until the end of the 1979 season.
