Bio
Recruited from Redan in the Ballarat Football League, Ian Baker was a versatile utility who split his time between a half-back flank and the midfield. He established himself at St Kilda in the late 1970s, enjoying his best campaign in 1977 where he polled eight Brownlow votes as a determined ball-winner who attacked the contest hard. After four seasons and 50 games at Moorabbin, Baker crossed to Richmond for the 1980 season, attempting to break into a powerful Tigers outfit on the verge of a premiership. However, he found senior opportunities limited amidst a star-studded lineup, managing just three appearances in the yellow and black before injury and selection pressure ended his VFL tenure. He eventually returned to the Ballarat league, where he became a celebrated local coach.
