Bio
Recruited from Swan Hill, Ian Borchard was a stocky, courageous ruck-rover who found senior opportunities limited amidst a powerful Richmond lineup in the late 1970s. Although he starred at the lower level—winning the 1976 reserves Best and Fairest and playing in the 1977 reserves premiership—he could not cement a permanent spot in the senior 22. After a fleeting appearance for South Fremantle, Borchard moved to the SANFL in 1979 to join West Adelaide, a decision that ultimately defined his footballing life. He became a dominant contested ball-winner and an inspirational captain for the Bloods, leading them to the 1983 premiership where he claimed the Jack Oatey Medal as best on ground. While his VFL career was brief, he retired as a dual club champion and a genuine legend of South Australian football.
