Recruited from the local Footscray District competition, Ian Bryant was a versatile and consistent performer who established himself as a key figure in the Bulldogs' defence during the 1960s. He broke into the senior side as a teenager and quickly found himself on the biggest stage, playing in the club's 1961 Grand Final loss to Hawthorn alongside club legend Ted Whitten. While that day ended in disappointment, Bryant developed into a reliable back pocket and wingman known for his strong overhead marking and ability to read the play.

His individual peak came in 1966, a stellar season where he finished ninth in the Brownlow Medal and earned All-Australian selection following his standout performances for Victoria at the Hobart Carnival. A durable player who rarely missed a match during his prime, he offered the Bulldogs great flexibility with his capacity to shut down opposition small forwards or generate drive further up the ground. After a decade of service at the Western Oval, Bryant departed the VFL to pursue coaching opportunities in the VFA with Geelong West and Werribee.
