Recruited from Eaglehawk in the Bendigo Football League, Ian Chinn was a diminutive but sharp-shooting rover and forward pocket who made the most of his brief time at the Lake Oval. Standing just 168cm, he relied on pace and goal sense to impact the scoreboard, bursting onto the scene in 1940 with a string of multiple-goal hauls that quickly endeared him to the South Melbourne faithful. His promising start was interrupted by the Second World War, which saw him miss the entire 1941 season before he returned for a final campaign in 1942. Despite playing just 17 senior games, Chinn finished with an impressive average of nearly two goals per game, a bright spark during a difficult era for the club before his life was tragically cut short when he died at the age of 38.
