Born in England but raised in Western Australia, Ian Dargie was a prolific midfielder who carved out a legendary state-league career either side of a brief AFL stint. After tasting premiership success with Subiaco, he was drafted by St Kilda as a mature-age recruit in 1988, playing ten games for the Saints before a trade sent him home to join the West Coast Eagles. His 1991 season remains a unique footnote in football history; while unable to crack a powerful Eagles lineup for more than a single senior appearance, he dominated at the local level to win the prestigious Sandover Medal that very same year. Though his AFL opportunities were limited, Dargie proved his class by capturing a second Sandover in 1994 and winning premierships in both the WAFL and QAFL.
