Stats
Bio
Recruited from Oakleigh Districts following a premiership campaign, Ian Gardner was a tall ruckman who arrived at Punt Road with a reputation for strong marking and a penetrating drop kick. Standing 191cm, he broke into the senior lineup late in the 1958 season, stringing together a run of games that extended into early 1959 and even earning selection in the VFL Reserves representative side. Despite showing promise as a fair and skillful tap ruckman, his senior VFL career was limited to just 10 appearances over two seasons. Gardner ultimately departed Richmond to join Springvale in the Federal League, where he blossomed into a genuine local football legend, captain-coaching the club and securing four premierships, four club champion awards, and the 1960 League best and fairest trophy during a dominant decade-long tenure.
