Bio
Recruited from North Launceston in Tasmania, Ian Marsh was a pacy and skilled wingman who developed into a key contributor for Essendon in the late 1970s. After a quiet start to his VFL career, he established himself as a regular senior player by 1978, becoming known for his balance, aggression, and ability to break lines with his speed. His career peaked in 1980, a standout individual season where he finished equal fifth in the club's Best and Fairest award. However, his time at the top level was cruelly cut short when he was diagnosed with a serious heart condition prior to the 1981 season. Following open-heart surgery, Marsh made a brave attempt to return via the reserves but was unable to play senior football again, eventually retiring as a "what could have been" talent who represented his home state of Tasmania with distinction.
