Bio
A product of Melbourne's youth system, Ian McGuinness worked his way up from the Under 19s to become a consistent performer at reserves level, notably finishing runner-up in the Demons' reserves best and fairest in 1974. Standing 187cm, the tall utility made his senior debut in 1973 but found opportunities scarce, managing just two appearances in the red and blue. Seeking greater opportunity, he transferred to Fitzroy for the 1975 season, though he added only a single senior game to his tally with the Lions. Following his brief VFL career, McGuinness established himself in the VFA with Prahran, where his form warranted selection for the VFA representative side against South Australia in 1980. Off the field, his career as a police officer later dictated moves to various country football clubs, including a stint captain-coaching Heyfield.
