Bio
Recruited from Northcote in the VFA, Ian McOrist was an unorthodox figure who arrived at Victoria Park with long hair and a peace medallion, immediately standing out against Collingwood’s conservative culture. On the field, he was a dashing half-forward with a magnificent long left-foot kick, best remembered for a spectacular performance in his first starting appearance where he booted six goals against St Kilda at the Junction Oval. That blistering cameo briefly convinced the Magpie Army they had unearthed a future star, but his form tapered off late in the season and a severe back injury the following pre-season ruined his chances of returning to senior football. After a solitary season comprising just 12 games—ending with a Semi-Final appearance—he eventually departed for country football and the VFA, leaving behind a legacy as one of the club's most fascinating "one-hit wonders."
