Recruited from Essendon High School Old Boys after winning a league best and fairest in the local competition, Ian Monks was a versatile rover and wingman who battled to cement a permanent spot in a strong Bombers lineup. After serving his apprenticeship in the seconds—where he tasted premiership success in 1952—Monks enjoyed a breakout season in the seniors in 1953, showing distinct promise as a forward to finish as the club's third-leading goalkicker. Despite this impact, he found senior opportunities scarce over the subsequent seasons and crossed to South Melbourne in 1956 seeking more regular game time. He added another 14 games to his tally with the Swans before departing the VFL to captain Caulfield in the VFA. A gifted all-round sportsman, Monks is often remembered by local sporting historians as a premier district cricketer who captained the Essendon Cricket Club to a premiership and pushed for Victorian state selection.
