Teams

Recruited from Wangaratta where he had played in the local league against teams coached by Bob Rose, Ian Montgomery was a stoic defender who followed Rose to Victoria Park to become a fixture of the Magpies' backline. Standing 183cm, he was physically imposing for a back pocket of the era yet possessed the agility to wear down resting rovers and the discipline to execute long, safety-first clearing kicks. His tenure at Collingwood is best remembered for his role in the 1966 Grand Final, where he manned the last line of defence during the club's heartbreaking one-point loss to St Kilda. A quintessential "stay-at-home" defender who never registered a goal in his 48 appearances, Montgomery left the VFL after just four seasons to become the inaugural coach of Rythdale-Officer-Cardinia and later served as an assistant at Dandenong.
