Stats
Bio
Recruited from Kew Amateurs after Hawthorn spent three years trying to secure his signature, Ian Mort was the son of former player Harry Mort and became the first son of a Hawk to play in a premiership side for the club. A physically imposing half-forward who could also pinch-hit in the ruck, Mort was renowned for his "tank-like" build and a bustling, aggressive style of play that intimidated opposition defenders. He was a central figure in the club's historic 1961 Grand Final triumph over Footscray, booting two vital goals—including a sharp, instinctive snap off the ground during the third quarter—and earning selection in the Sporting Globe's Team of the Year for the first of two consecutive seasons. Despite establishing himself as a damaging left-footer and a consistent senior performer, Mort's VFL career was surprisingly short, as he retired at the age of 28 to become the captain-coach of Vermont in the Eastern Districts Football League.
