Bio
The grandson of former Bomber Charlie Payne, Ian Payne progressed from the under-19s to make a memorable senior debut season in 1965. At just 18 years of age, the rover and forward pocket was selected as the 19th man for the Grand Final against St Kilda, capping off his rookie year with a premiership medallion in only his eighth VFL game. Despite this dream start, Payne's career became defined by frustration rather than further silverware, as chronic knee injuries severely limited his availability over the next six years. While he possessed the skill and agility to be a consistent contributor, his body ultimately let him down, forcing him to retire at the end of the 1971 season with just 45 games to his name.
