Recruited from Heidelberg in Melbourne's northern suburbs, Ian Powell was a sturdy defender who joined Fitzroy as the club entered a lean period in the early 1960s. Standing 175cm with a solid build, he made his senior debut in Round 4, 1961 against North Melbourne and was primarily utilised in the back pocket or on a half-back flank. He found it difficult to cement a permanent place in the senior lineup, featuring sporadically over three seasons while the Lions struggled for on-field consistency. Powell played a total of 15 games without registering a goal, eventually departing the VFL scene following Fitzroy's wooden spoon campaign in 1963.
