Recruited from Frankston, Ian Roberts arrived at South Melbourne in 1979 and quickly established himself as a cornerstone of the club's defence during a period of immense upheaval. As a traditional full-back, Roberts was renowned for his close-checking style, discipline, and spoiling ability, tasks he performed admirably while the club transitioned from the parochial environment of Lake Oval to the Sydney Cricket Ground. He remained a constant figure in the backline throughout the chaotic private ownership era of the 1980s, often tasked with nullifying the competition's most dangerous key forwards while the team around him struggled for on-field consistency.

Roberts' standing as a premier defender was validated by his selection for Victoria in State of Origin football, a significant accolade for a player in a frequently struggling side. He played a vital role in providing stability and leadership to the Swans' defensive unit until his retirement in 1991. Bridging the gap between the heritage of South Melbourne and the developing identity of the Sydney Swans, Roberts is remembered as a reliable and uncompromising defender who held his own against the greatest goal-kickers of his generation.
