Bio
Recruited from Wangaratta in the Ovens & Murray League, Ian "Doggy" Rowland was a clever rover who became a key figure in St Kilda's rise from cellar dwellers to contenders during the 1960s. While he lacked blistering pace, he compensated with sharp goal sense and an ability to read the play, attributes that saw him top the club's goalkicking in 1961. As his career progressed, coach Allan Jeans reinvented him as a disciplined run-with player, often tasked with tagging the opposition's most dangerous rovers, including the legendary Bob Skilton.
Despite playing 109 games and featuring in the losing 1965 Grand Final side, Rowland is best remembered for one of the most heartbreaking selection calls in club history. After playing 18 games in the 1966 season—including the Preliminary Final win over Essendon—he was the only player omitted from the side for the Grand Final, making way for Kevin Billing. He missed out on the Saints' solitary premiership by the slimmest of margins and left the VFL immediately after the season, returning to the country to coach Finley at just 25 years of age.
