Recruited from Avenel, Ian "Bluey" Shelton is revered as one of Essendon's toughest-ever defenders, renowned for his fearless attack on the ball at centre half-back. A key figure in the 1962 premiership, his career was interrupted by a farming accident that cost him the sight in one eye and forced him to miss the entire 1964 season. Shelton returned in 1965 to vice-captain the side, overcoming both his vision impairment and a concealed shoulder injury to help secure a second flag. He retired at just 25 due to the demands of commuting from his farm, but his impact was enduring enough to earn selection in Essendon’s Team of the Century and inspire a young Kevin Sheedy to adopt his number 10 guernsey.
