Bio
Recruited from the VAFA’s University Blues, Tampion was a wingman whose brief VFL career is best remembered for a single, bizarre moment of brilliance. During a 1958 clash against St Kilda at the Junction Oval, Tampion marked 80 yards from goal just as the three-quarter time siren sounded; believing the distance impossible, he attempted to hand the ball to the umpire until captain-coach Ron Clegg ordered him to take the kick. With a howling gale behind him and the Saints' defenders having already turned their backs in anticipation of the break, Tampion launched a massive drop punt that sailed through for what The Age dubbed the "goal of the season." While the schoolteacher managed only 16 senior games in the red and white before a short stint with Carlton’s reserves, that long-range strike remains a unique footnote in South Melbourne folklore.
