Stats
Bio
Recruited from Melbourne High School, Ian Thorogood established himself as a disciplined half-back flanker during the Demons' golden era under Norm Smith. He became a defensive staple in three premiership sides (1957, 1959, and 1960), famously entering the 1957 Grand Final as a reserve to replace the injured Keith Carroll. Despite his on-field success, Thorogood retired from VFL football at just 27 to pursue coaching, a move that yielded immediate results when he led Waverley to a VFA Division 1 flag. His tactical acumen later saw him return to the top flight as the senior coach of Carlton for two seasons, before eventually serving Melbourne as an assistant coach and board member.
