Recruited from VFA club Prahran, Ivan Porter was a goal-kicking rover whose top-level career was heavily impacted by World War II service. The son of former Fitzroy president Ossie Porter, his transition to the VFL involved a brief dispute in 1944 when he trained with St Kilda, only for Melbourne to refuse his clearance and retain his services. After breaking into the senior side via the seconds, Porter enjoyed a standout 1945 campaign, playing 19 games and booting 26 goals as a crafty small forward option. Despite that strong showing, he fell out of favour the following season, adding just four games to his tally in 1946 before departing the playing arena. He maintained a strong connection to the Demons long after his retirement, returning to serve as a club director in the late 1960s.
