Recruited from Caulfield, Ivor Smith was a tall follower who arrived at the Junction Oval during a bleak era for the club. Standing 185cm, he possessed the size to compete in the ruck or key positions, but his entry into league football was delayed by a broken collarbone suffered in a pre-season training match in 1951. He finally made his senior debut in Round 11, 1952 against Footscray, managing nine games in his first season as the Saints struggled toward the wooden spoon. Despite that promising run of consistency, he found senior opportunities scarce over the next two years, adding just four more appearances before departing at the end of the 1954 season.
