Bio
Originating from the Flemington CYMS, J. Ray Thomas was a sturdy back pocket defender whose VFL career was brief but spanned two clubs in the immediate post-war era. He made his debut with Essendon in 1945, managing four senior appearances in defence, but found himself unable to secure a permanent role in the Bombers' lineup. He subsequently transferred to South Melbourne (the future Sydney Swans) where he spent two seasons on the list, yet opportunities remained scarce at the Lakeside Oval. Thomas added only two more games to his tally across 1946 and 1947, primarily serving as a depth player before concluding his time at the elite level.
